Labantu was formed in 1998 by four guys, Nathaniel Malatji, Draphter Mashego, Nixon and Moses Malatji. Nathaniel and Draphter met back in 1994 while attending School in Orange Farm. Their first Band was called Voice Educational Youth Band while attending school. After splitting up in up 1989, they regrouped again in 1997 with new members under a new name Labantu.

 

The two brothers Nathaniel & Moses have being playing together since childhood. They have performed in churches, weddings and parties, before moving Orange Farm near Johannesburg. The two brothers were born in Limpopo Province (Bolobedu). Nixon, the saxophonist met moved to Orange Farm in 1994 where he played with various bands until he met the Natt, Moses and Draphter.

 

They were named Labantu by the people who enjoyed the music coming out of the rehearsal room where the group was practicing. Labantu meaning “The voice of the people". Since their rehearsal days, the band is now enjoying a great following after their self-entitled debut Cd, "Labantu" which was produced by the ace producer, Don Laka. "I heard the group perform and i was swept away “says Don.” I new then I had to sign them to my new company, Bokone music".

 

Their performance at the World Summit left a significant mark on the audience. Labantu has performed at different Jazz festivals with big names like Kirk Whalum, Selaelo Selota, Don Laka and Jimmy Dludlu and many more.
